Alan Pearson: Expressionist Portraits
by Alison Pearson, Alexandra Stewart Press, 2010
“This new book by Alison Pearson is far and away the best I have seen this year devoted to a single artist. ... Collectively, Alan Pearson’s self-portraits are a remarkable feat; as Rembrandt's self-portraits told the story of that painter and his continuing deep self-analysis, so do Pearson's. They are unmatched in our art”. Bryan James, Arts Editor, Otago Daily Times
“Pearson’s is a rare achievement of a universal and spiritual impulse that few New Zealand artists have, or will ever, come close to.” Dr Warren Feeney, NZ Listener
Regarded as a foremost expressionist painter and a portraitist without peer in New Zealand, Alan Pearson has received high praise for his work. Over fifty years of portraits, painted and drawn in New Zealand, England, Italy and Australia, are brought together in this book. Designed by the artist, it contains visually exciting illustrations drawn from the artist’s collection, from private collectors internationally and from New Zealand public art galleries.
Art historian Alison Pearson lucidly analyses the portraits, the artist’s developing expressionist technique meanwhile revealing the stories inherent in the portraits. Other written contributions to the book add immediacy, and many are recollections of portrait-sitters, artists, authors and friends, who witnessed Pearson making paintings.
